Poetry | I Had a Dream

I Had a Dream
By Nevin Compton Trammell
I had a dream
that some force picked me up
and
put me down
in some new
and different town
that I had never seen before
with small shops
and church towers with clocks
that told different times
and bells
that all chimed in rhymes
And no one was there
except an old couple
sitting in a parkside chair
each holding a flower
such a beautiful pair
Between them rested
an opened book
and I moved closer
to take a look
and there was nothing there
to see
except a mirror
staring at me
Nevin Compton Trammell’s journey with poetry began by writing on scraps of paper and bar napkins, which he furtively squirreled away in closet drawers and shoeboxes. Many years (and many shoeboxes) later, he reluctantly began to share his poetry with close friends. At their urging he was encouraged to literally bring his poetry out of the closet. His book Cream Soda Blues: Poems for Adult Children of Life was the result. Two years later he was chosen to be in the international poetry anthology called Leading from Within: Poetry That Sustains the Courage to Lead. It profiles the work of great American leaders and how the works of great American poets inform and inspire their lives. He continues to write his musings on any scrap of paper he can get his hands on.
